COLONIAL DAY A
The Pro-Am: Doing the Dreadful Duty
We MUST do the Pro-Am & like most things in life, one can or could, could … either COMPLAIN or one could retool the attitude, spin it up so it is fun, enjoyable & have a blast.
It was a fabulous day, great fun historically so let’s just leap into the highlights.
First, technical difficuties connecting to the network for no good & apparent reason. So bear with things. Rest assured there WILL be entries & the quality a high level but posted or posting may be later.
Today, the pro with our group was Hunter Mahan. Very exciting, member of the 2008 US Ryder Cup team FB & I watched win the Ryder Cup that year the LAST TIME the US won the Ryder Cup. Yeah, we were there.
The other four (4) members were amatuers without question however collectively they could have passed for four (4) comedians. They took turns making awful shots with the occasional brilliant shot from time to time.
Douggie Duff chipped in on #14 to the utter astonishment of all. One caddie had ‘Bobbitt’ on his bib & Shelia, the scorer for our group, and I were thinking aloud if it was THE SAME Bobbitt that had his tallywhacker whacked, tossed out of a car window & left for dead in a Virginia intersection by then wife with knife Lorenna some years ago.
Hal Brockett was a fast-talking attorney who told his young caddie at one point to hold his beer. When the lad grabbed & held the beer, Hal quickly informed the caddie that he was suddenly guilty of a Class C misdemeaner however Hal would represent him ‘for free.’
He was wild, all over the lot & early on the biggest cut up but Duff had him beat overall.
Berkley Craig was rumored to be a dentist & had a very accomplished game. Berk told me that they had all known each other for years, worked together & all told some incredible stories.
Like Duff had a house in Mexico & was going down to a ‘new lake’ just opened to go fishing.
Our walking pro for the Pro-am was Josh. A collegiate star from Arizona, he was leasing a golf course in Grand Prairie. We chatted back & forth quite a bit. He knew Ricky Fowler & played in the years between Mahan & Martin while they were both at Oklahoma State.
Our scorer at introduction just moved back to Texas from New York.
‘OK. Where about’s?’
‘Upstate’
‘OK. Where about’s?’
‘Every hear of Binghamton?’
MOTHER OF PEARL !!
We hit it off. She played at Binghamton CC & we shared many stories.
Like we were waiting to go on the first tee box & mentioned that her husband was out of town. I used this opportunity to toss in a little wise crack with the other sign person & scorer there for the group in front of us & Jimmy just howled.
After the round, Crazy Jimmy, his brother Crazy Dave & Jerry had a very long gigglefest over the free flowing dark beer of the day. Of course Jimmy told Dave that I was hitting on the scorer so I had to disspell that little rumor right away.
We went back & forth until they had to leave. Did I mention that I have a rather large following in Forth Worth & my reputation approacheth icon or legend status ?
It’s a different culture, pace and much more relaxed They all seemed to be very interested & amused by my ‘retirement / unemployed’ status / life-style. I answered ALL questions related to work, girls & golf with the usual flair for blending arrogance, humility & brutal honesty that you as members of this elite club are aware & familiar with well by now.
Anyway, Dave flew in late last night from Thailand & got to Jimmy’s house to catch the last of the Blackhawks v Ducks game that went to TRIPLE OT. They are BOTH big time Hawks Fans being from Chi-town. So they were tired but happy with the Hawks win.
See attached photo with Hunter Mahan & your reporter. He graciously obliged a quick pose after completion of play & also autographed a ball. A Titliest Pro-V1X (90) which will find a place in the ball rack in the den/library/study. I know the rack is full however we WILL make a place of honor for this one.
So tomorrows group is Scott Brown, Scott Piercy & Harrison Frazar. I have been with Frazar before so the group is not spectacular but you KNOW it will be fun. Then there is Goof Off Friday, guests Saturday & the final stretch Sunday.
OK. Closing out for today. Will post as promptly as I am able.
From the 2015 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Ft Worth, this is Bill out.
