COLONIAL DAY I
AND THEY’RE OFF & RUNNING …
Rain delayed the start of the first day of play with the first indication being a 'heads up' of a two (2) hour start delay via smartphone message either text or broadcast email. It doesn’t matter which as my original scheduled time was 12:23 so late just got later. The technology was wonderful for the up-to-date notification but more on the headaches of technology more towards the end of the report.
This proud, unnamed volunteer sports POSSIBLE gear for future events in similar weather conditions. Boots for true depth irrespective of water or mud & heavy-duty upper body rain retardent / moisture repellant material.
The scorer today was Debbie. A nice little lady wearing a floppy rain hat & dark designer sunglasses so not needed. She resembled a young & petite Lady bird Johnson back in the day. The hat-glasses combo was reminescent of a dolly I escorted to the Kentucky Derby years ago.
The group was Scott Brown from Aiken, SC, Scott Piercy who I had heard of & Harrison Frazar who I had walked with before.
Frazar was the most widely known of the group and was engaging & friendly. His wife & a gaggle of young boys followed us around & the one son would duck under the ropes for a powerade every few holes.
The Scooters (Brown & Piercy) both ended up Even par (70) when Brown holed out for an eagle 2 on the last hole, number 9 for us this day. Frazar ended the day -2 (68) 'effortlessly' as he stated afterwards. He was -3 at one point but 3-putted #7 for bogey & that was how he finished.
While it didn’t rain on our group, the sun didn’t shine either. Crowds seemed small except when we got near watering holes (where the booze was being sold). There the noise picked up & very late in the day the drunken sailors were all walking like the deck was tilted. Makes one ponder exactly how many are ‘fans’ & know the difference between a bogey & a birdie or are just looking for a new, novel or fun new place to get snockered with friends.
Anyway, I am off tomorrow, Friday, which is now today. It is overcast, I have the (book) The Internet is NOT the Answer that I really want to read. The room here is cold, I mean VERY cold.
In fact, it was so cold yesterday that I was really glad that I threw a long-sleeve white tee shirt into my bag. It was just unpleasant enough to need it AND use it.
FINALLY, to the technology.
I have tried multiple times now to get on to the local network & wi-fi without success. I mean I have gotten on here in years past & with this machine truth be told. And it doesn’t pop up as even an option, choice or available network. I am not getting it. It MAY have something to do with the updates & upgrades that are trying to be auto-installed.
I noticed even while at home that I get the ‘warnings’, let it load up, it gets to 99%, stalls/stops a moment, thinks, gets to 100% then the next message on the screen informs the operator (me) that it could not finish loading & then begins UNinstalling everything it had just taken minutes to install.
Have I used maddening yet in this report ?
So last night I asked the front desk clerk if he was aware of any hardware / system / equipment issues etc due to the weather as I was having trouble connecting to the network.
He replied not & said I could call the IT people tomorrow (which is now today) between 8-5 & they might could help. I can also call the geek squad as that is an option at now cost now but the term is running out. I mean I do have ALL day today.
Day II report will follow …
