XXXIII Junius
I discovered something yesterday I thought pretty cool and this flipped the threshold switch to make it ‘newsworthy’ here enough to share.
As I was waking, I reached for and fired up andy the android to check weather and other numbers.
Everything was in order so I thought I would explore a bit and the TunedIn app popped up and open from the previous evening so I started scrolling. This I view as a little ‘mental exercise’ before rolling out and beginning the rigors of the day.
Minor league baseball has proven a mild diversion of late and I was amused by many of the uncommon names for the various teams from leagues and regions across the country.
Then a large purple logo for the ‘Wimbledon Radio Channel’ caught my eye and I clicked on it opening the channel. England and the UK are 5-6 hours ahead of US in time zones so it was early to mid-afternoon there and play was in progress and the action was all on.
I must confess leave it to the British to make tennis on the radio entertaining and amusing. And since the tourney is just starting, one can look forward to two (2) weeks of such action, analysis and commentary. The US announcers could learn much from colleagues across the pond.
With my limited experience thus far, the long volleys are a hoot. The longer the volley, the excitement wrenches up and this listener gets the sense the announcer is going to have a heart attack or something. But NOT like a John Madden heart attack.
I really don’t like tennis and did play occasionally during my undergraduate days.
Also yesterday, as I began my training ride, I approached a curbside pile and I noticed from a distance a terra cotta pot. Sure enough, a collection of such pots sat near the curb and I only slowed preferring to think about it and carry on with the ride first.
Thinking such treasures would not last on the curb long, I pretty much dismissed acquiring or even getting a second look at the pots.
Well, the ride was only 40K and within two (2) hours I was finished and this time passing the pile paused to take a closer look. The pots and junk were undisturbed so I pedaled home, loaded Silver and returned to the scene of the potential crime.
I went up and knocked on the front door and no one was home or answered the door bell a second time so I helped myself to 7-8 large terra cotta pots. But that’s not all. As a bonus, some had nice potting soil AND one had a growing but sickly stand of mint. It needs some trimming and TLC but can do that.
AND, there was another bonus find with a larger unknown plant in very sad shape but small fresh green growth near the base which I feel confident can be resurrected and revived to a healthy state.
So a few more projects to occupy my time. I think I will arrange some of the newer ones into the existing constellation and offer one or a few to Rob who is quite fond of such pots especially with patina.
OK.
Fourth of July eve and we can burn the house down. (Ike Rielly)
